Better zinc levels associated with fewer migraines. More bitter taste sensitivity linked to less CoV - and what are bitter taste receptors doing in the heart?
Scientists aren't sure about the last one - contractility, vascular health? Unknowns....
Dietary Zinc Linked to Reduced Migraine Risk, Jennie Smith, 17 Jan 2023, “People with higher dietary zinc intake have a nearly one-third lower risk of migraine than those who get little zinc in their diets, according to results from a cross-sectional study of more than 11,000 American adults.” Read more: (medscape.com) News article regarding: (Liu, Wang, Dong, Yu, 2022)
Zinc intake was estimated from NHANES 1999-2004 US data. Higher levels of zinc intake had an inverse relationship with migraine risk. Quintiles 3 and 4 had fairly similar reductions in migraine risk - 0.62 and 0.67 with zinc intakes ranging from Q3 (19.3–24.3 mg/day) to Q4 (24.4–32.5 mg/day). Greater migraine risk was seen with Quintile 1’s deficient level of zinc intake, (Q1: 0.5–9.6 mg/day). (Liu, Wang, Dong, Yu, 2022)
Zinc!
Extremely related - people with less bitter taste sensitivity were found to be more at risk for more severe COVID19. Supertasters - those more sensitive to bitter tastes were least likely to test positive for Covid19. (Barham, et al., 2021) Lack of bitter taste receptor expression is a lack of zinc finger proteins for gene transcription problem.
To keep it in the heart mode for now - bitter taste receptors are also found in the heart. (Bloxham, Foster, Thomas, 2020) *and the lungs, kidneys, and elsewhere. Bitter taste receptors perform many varied functions and the tongue seems to be our built in dosing mechanism to tell us how much of the potent tastes we need for health vs how much is too much and avoid the potentially toxic substance.
Moderation is often the key to what is healthy versus what is harmful.

I like bitter from aronia and highbush cranberry. A long list of greens although I wilt them in the dehydrator. Sometimes lightly cooked in a dish over the top for a minute or so to reduce the plant's defenses. Chewing stinging nettle leaves raw my tongue stings for a day! No migraines ever for me.
