Niacin protocol update & Vit C for heavy metal detox.
and defense of methyl folate and methyl or hydroxy cobalamin. Also vitamin C plays a starring role in the post. Geraniums get a hat-tip.
The high dose niacin protocol helps me a lot, but consistency of dosing is really important to have stable serotonin levels. Forgetting too often once on the high dose niacin, is like suddenly stopping a serotonin reuptake inhibitor medication. The high-dose niacin preserves tryptophan for use as serotonin. Suddenly increasing doses of high dose niacin can also cause problems of a sudden serotonin excess.
Gradually increasing dose and then sticking with it is ideal. The problem is A) forgetfulness, and B) 1000 mg of niacin is an acidic load on the gut. I find I need to take it with a meal. Adding a larger breakfast to get a morning dose in, led to disrupting my intermittent fasting routine. I have found that taking a 500 mg capsule first thing in the morning doesn’t upset my gut and tapers my mood better than putting off the 1000 mg until a larger meal (~10:00 am).
Having consistent habits would be nice too, but recognizing that I don’t, that that is not my nature - is nicer because it helps me recognize where I need to make things easier for my inconsistent abilities. Acceptance - I am inconsistent - and need consistency - how can I help myself, help myself better?
One day at a time and try not to dwell on feeling like a failure because of an innately inconsistent ADHD nature.
Linking habits to another habit can help. When I have a larger meal, I try to always have a large dose of niacin - that gets in two hopefully a day and three times a day or an extra 500 mg is helpful generally rather than too much for me. It is important for me to also take the rest of my more than RDA level methyl and other B vitamins.
Comment regarding something being said by the person promoting the high dose niacin protocol:
I feel a need to comment regarding Dmitry Kats, PhD and his current discussion of methyl folate vs folic acid - for an unknown reason to me (he had blocked me on all platforms over Ivermectin), he is currently bashing methyl forms of the supplements, (on FB). This makes no sense - methyl folate and methyl or hydroxy cobalamin are what the body can use. As a clinically trained nutritionist, I cannot endorse his statement or unknown latest version of his protocol. He is not clinically trained in nutrition or medicine (research science degree) and has been giving many strong statements about nutrients that include correct and helpful information, and also some very odd claims. It is human experimentation to make recommendations without a basis in clinical trials or other strong evidence.
Abram Hoffer is the real/first “Niacin Guy”.
Hoffer and two others wrote the book Niacin: The Real Story: Learn about the Wonderful Healing Properties of Niacin, by Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, Andrew Saul, PhD, and Harold D. Foster, Ph.D. Abram Hoffer found high dose niacin (3 doses of 1000 mg per day) beneficial for patients with schizophrenia - in 1971 and yet it still isn’t a mainstream medical treatment. Addition, from the comments - look for the second/latest edition as it is twice as long and has a section on Covid. Thanks Skylover_once!
A quote from the book’s introduction:
“In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.” - Yogi Berra
Maybe this following quote (from Wikipedia) is why Dmitry is bashing on methyl folate and methyl cobalamin - he wants niacin to do/claim all the work. Maybe niacin likes having team players though.
“Hoffer thought niacin could be used as a methyl acceptor to prevent the conversion of noradrenaline into adrenaline and that Vitamin C could be used to prevent the oxidation of Adrenaline to Adrenochrome. Hoffer called his theory the "adrenochrome hypothesis".” (Wikipedia) *I think of Wikipedia as what the mainstream is saying.
And maybe that is also why the powers that be don’t want the populace to have plenty of vitamin C (they seem to like adrenochrome). It was extremely odd that vitamin C was suppressed, called a myth, etc, during early outbreak. It made it clear to me right away that the “public health” powers were not going to be helpful. Clinics providing intravenous vitamin C therapy were shut down by the FDA. It is basically not available at hospitals where I asked about it. A silly excuse that they used was that the in-hospital laboratory couldn’t provide vitamin C for intravenous use, which made no sense. Ascorbic acid powder is very available.
Vitamin C is also helpful for detoxing metals like arsenic and fluoride. A link was shared in the comments of my recent pomegranate post, Thanks!
Not easy to follow, but very hopeful: Vitamin C Mitigating and Rescuing from Synergistic Toxicity: Sodium Fluoride, Silicofluorides, Aluminum Salts, Electromagnetic Pollution, and SARS-CoV-2. (Davidson and Winey, 2021) I took some vitamin C after reading (part of it). Roughly - vitamin C may help stabilize/promote enzymatic reaction in a supramolecular way - it doesn’t actively bond with the other chemicals, but is in the electrical field, stabilizing it (somehow/quantum electrical field-fuzzy to me yet).
Why is fluoride bad? Theoretically, with evidentiary support, in vivo - in living watery tissue - it disrupts the weaker hydrogen bond “cooperativity” - surface tension? If fluoride is disrupting the ability for water to cling together in an organized fashion - like a rain droplet, that would likely cause problems in most other chemical reactions within a watery environment too.
“A large body of published research provides the scientific basis for the assertion that fluoride species, in vivo, have a pleiotropic supramolecular basis for their toxicity which arises largely by disrupting hydrogen bond coopertivity in vivo, in many microenvironments (Froede 1985; Murphy 1992; Kentsis 2004; Strunecka 2012).” (Davidson and Winey, 2021)
Also of interest - with increasing complexity, we have increased amounts of heat to release somehow (to dissipate):
“Under this hypothetical framework, water plays a central role. Water, itself, is capable of oxidation catalysis in presence of certain redox active transition metals (Rudshteyn2018). In combination, activated “spin water” is postulated to lower the free energy barriers via quantum nuclear tunneling, effectively flattening the free energy landscape for chemical biology. In this scenario, ever increasing complexity is gained at a cost of dissipation of heat to the environment, in an open dissipative system which exists far from thermodynamic equilibrium.” (Davidson and Winey, 2021)
The chemistry in that paper is above my current level of understanding, however, by reading and looking things up I can learn, and sometimes there is relevance to other areas of study that I am more familiar with.
High dose niacin protocol is beneficial, possibly to some people genetically more than others, because it helps us release excess inflammation/oxidative stress energy as heat.
The GP109 niacin receptor can uncouple mitochondria from ATP production to release energy as heat, more like brown adipose tissue does anyway. The uncomfortable “niacin flush” is direct evidence of a surge of heat release - but it is also activation of TRPV1 channels in the skin and nose and can cause a similar feeling to having just eaten hot pepper/capsaicin. This also thins mucus which helps if chronically congested. It is not fun to eat too many hot peppers when you aren’t used to them. Genetically I do tend towards being chronically congested. My BHMT gene allele causes a similar inability to make endocannabinoids as people with Cystic fibrosis, but their problems are more extensive than mine. I can’t make the phospholipid part of cannabinoids and people with CF can’t make the fatty acid section.
Excerpt from my "Problem Solving and Terpenes” episode of my How Are You Feeling? podcast series. I have been problem solving my genetic differences since I was a toddler and could feed myself houseplants. I have an genetic need for an external source of phospholipids and cannabinoids. Turns out geraniums are a source of phospholipids, probably not tasty though. My mom made me stop.
The genetic defect of cystic fibrosis is in fatty acid synthesis, and cannabinoids are made up of a fatty acid such as arachidonic acid attached to a phospholipid such as phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS), and so both I and an infant with cystic fibrosis would not be able to make cannabinoids. In an animal based study with the gene involved in cystic fibrosis, treatment with cannabinoids given during infancy helped prevent long term anxiety from developing later in the animal’s lives, a common problem seen in CF patients. (Bregman and Fride, 2011)
I think gradual increase in dose is important to give the body time to keep up with detox as well as for stable serotonin levels. I don’t even notice a flush at all from the 500 mg capsule of niacin that I use as a back-up to my ~ 1000 mg powdered niacin doses I take after a meal. I have some of the 500 mg capsules in my travel bag in case I am out too long or forgot a dose.
We need to focus on the fact that “treatment” can help CoV, when it isn’t a CoV death protocol, and not get lost in which treatment is the best. The one that is available when it is needed is going to be the best. The many that are needed to work together as a team would be ideal.

Baking trivia - rose geranium leaves were used to make rose flavored cakes by lining the baking pan with the leaves, and then removing the leaves before frosting the cake. - Fun cookbook for people who like to read the stories about food, not just have a recipe. Victorian Cakes: A Reminiscence with Recipes, by Caroline B. King, (secondsale.com) *I am unaffiliated and did try a recipe or two. People who read cookbooks may be reading for techniques or for culture and history.
Brief return to the idea of complexity and dissipating increased heat - I saw a news soundbite that geneticists were making bioluminescent trees that would provide light at night…and I groaned. For a firefly to make bioluminescent flashes of light is a small scale use of energy - for an entire tree to be forced to make bioluminescent light will come at an energy cost to the tree - and mess up circadian cycles that the tree and surrounding environment normally depend on.
Geneticists need to know their place in the pecking order of creation and Mother Nature. They aren’t on it, shouldn’t be on it, and are creating monstrosities as evidenced by the patented chimeric spike and the latest Omicron hybrid; recent post: News tidbits featuring Daszak, Baric, and also Fauci money and new GOF work. The Island of Dr. Moreau, by H.G. Wells, was supposed to be a warning, not a playbook. We are living in a nightmare - that is a living reality, and denial of that reality is not really going to help.
Addition: a recent version of Dmitry Katz’ Niacin and Melatonin protocol.

Wow, a simple increase from 2 Nature Made B-complex to 3…
(at 110 lbs) reduced horrible debilitating night sweats dramatically ! from sleeping on beach blanket towels and running to the shower at 1, 2, 4 ,5 am to sleeping with covers, and pajamas within 3 weeks!
So much for the nonsense “diagnosis” of Anxiety…
( which was odd in itself….)
Thank you for saving months of physical distress, frustration with blood tests, potential mental evaluation~ probable imposition of anti-depressants…
For little more than a vitamin deficiency.
May supreme positive powers which dominate this universe protect you and your commenters.
Hello Jennifer,
would like to update that second edition of the "Niacin, the real story" is out, got it some weeks back, still reading ofcourse, but its almost double of the first edition with covid 19 included :) kind of a must buy!
