New CVD research - omega 3 beneficial, beta-carotene not helpful, increased all-cause mortality risk.
Retinoid Toxicity is involved is my guess. Helpful - mitochondrial support, vit D, Mg, Zn; mitochondrial support - a-lipoic acid, CoQ10, melatonin; & catechin, flavanol, querctin, & curcumin.
The work by (Gormaz, Carrasco, 2022) Juan G. Gormaz, Rodrigo Carrasco, (2022). Antioxidant Supplementation in Cardiovascular Prevention∗: New Challenges in the Face of New Evidence, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 80(24):2286-2288, ISSN 0735-1097, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jacc.2022.10.011. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0735109722071236 , the article is not viewable to me and is discussed in an article on NutraIngredients: Meta-analysis: Some micronutrients may be better for the heart than others, (nutraingredients-usa.com).
The team list many things found helpful to some level of ‘evidence'-based criteria, while vitamin C, D, E, and selenium did not show long-term protective benefits for cardiovascular health. The beneficial list for moderate to high quality evidence for reducing risk factors for CVD is longer and includes vitamin D (sunshine or full spectrum light might be even better):
omega-3 fatty acid with the strongest evidence, omega-6 fatty acid (probably GLA or CLA);
the amino acids: L-arginine, L-citrulline;
folic acid - also stronger evidence - (think what methyl folate could do);
vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, (immune support);
alpha-lipoic acid, Coenzyme Q-10, melatonin, (mitochondrial support);
catechin, curcumin, flavanol, and quercetin; (pomegranate peel plus curcumin, onion, and moong dal curry - phytonutrient rich and protein).
And the interesting clincher - beta-carotene was a negative, increasing all-cause mortality. (nutraingredients-usa.com). Hmmm - Retinoid Toxicity is my guess.
Vitamin C may not be helpful consistently as it is a pro-oxidant and when too much is used it may increase inflammation more than is present. Higher doses are needed during the inflammatory situation, not as a prevention. I take 100 mg a day and upped that to several 100 mg a day while sick with CoV. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is less likely to act in any pro-oxidant way. I take 200 mg / day of CoQ10 and have been using 10-20 mg melatonin several times during the day with high dose niacin. I use Epsom salt baths for magnesium and 1000-2000 units of vit D but prefer the sun. I use a higher than RDA for each of the Bs and methyl forms of folate and B12. A good Trace Mineral mix is in my supplement routine, plus selenium and extra zinc.
Health can be delicious, and trickier than we may realize.

How can one get full spectrum light (outside of getting sunshine)?
