The Microbiota-Gut-brain-axis - is considered a neuroendocrine system. / & food truck cooking classes & EO 13887 - DJT gave the DoD a lot of power over vaks.
Our microbiome can make happy neurotransmitters or add to chronic illness and our diet choices make a difference in which happens.
Beneficial gut species make a signaling chemicals for our brain which can travel directly to the brain through the large vagus nerve. That nerve super highway is called the gut-brain axis. Adding microbiota- helps emphasize that it is a team effort. Our symbionts help our mood and our health or can harm it.
“The microbiota-gut-brain axis is considered a neuroendocrine system that acts bidirectionally and plays an important role in stress responses. The metabolites produced by microbiota metabolism can modulate gut bacterial composition and brain biochemistry acting as neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Gut microbiota composition can be influenced by dietary ingestion of natural bioactive molecules such as probiotics, prebiotics and polyphenol. Microbiota composition can be altered by dietary changes and gastrointestinal dysfunctions are observed in neurodegenerative diseases.” (Filosa, Di Meo, Crispi, 2018)
Polyphenols are very helpful to health in many ways and to the microbiome, (Filosa, Di Meo, Crispi, 2018), and the antioxidants in plants are also beneficial to both our health and our microbiome symbionts. (Naliyadhara, et al., 2023) If we look at gut dysbiosis from the microbiota perspective, it is a scarcity or feast issue, some species fail due to scarcity of nutrients they need and other species feast on what is plentiful. Eat too large of a serving of fruit or raw vegetables and the gassiness is a sign that the feast led to overgrowth and excess fermentation by species that like fructose or fiber and resistant starch.
Systems biology and functional health care or nutrition is a topic that I learned about gradually while trying to improve my own health problems. Others have been working in the field since 1990 or so. The approach to health - restore underlying function - is gaining ground but is not the standard Western medical approach which is more adversarial. Disease is something to fight and correct. Fighting our symbionts is fighting ourselves, instead we need to learn what the beneficial ones need to thrive and provide that for them. We need to start thinking more from a mindset of a cafeteria manager. Food is not just for our tongue to taste, it is for our body and microbiota to use as building blocks and for energy.
Do you want to build your body out of synthetic chemicals? Harmful species of the gut microbiomes are the ones that thrive on a processed food diet. Suggesting microbial species throughout the various body areas also would switch over to more harmful species thriving.
The fact that our mitochondria are also bacterial in nature suggests they wouldn’t thrive on processed foods.
/Change of topic - I signed up for a Nutrigenetics/Nutrigenomics screening company that works with individual practitioners as affiliates of a sort. They provide training and have a standardized report that purchasers receive. The practitioner or a mentor of the company would then help interpret it into actual diet, lifestyle, exercise, and supplement goals. The system does look good. Instead of focusing on individual gene alleles, they look at where clusters of changes may affect major pathways like methylation, detoxification and over 30 others. Even simplified and streamlined, 146 gene alleles and over 30 pathways is a lot of information. Graphics and symbols are used to help provide the information visually and in text.
My revelation — I took their basic training course already — it was a nice overview, and review of genetics, however it was pretty simple and intended for the practitioner. Comments suggest others found it difficult. My pomegranate paper was an in depth prep though. My blog posts are not that simple. True, largely.
It is in the details that we can also learn more about the big picture.
I will wait to get my own sample test (and post later) to see how it compares to what I have learned from previous screenings. An advantage to their company is no connection to Google ownership of genetic data or some other tech company. Security of the ID and gene data seems good. My concern with simple though, is that a double allele of a gene could be highly significant. Their reports do highlight some gene alleles as high risk and name the allele for the individual specifically in their customized report, but otherwise focuses on the pathways and names few genes in the main report. As genes work in teams it does seem like a good approach. One gene allele in a pathway may not impact the function as much as several genes. One very dysfunctional gene allele, double, from both parents, may though. That would be a high-risk gene named in the report.
The company is 3x4genetics.com and if interested in having me as a linked practitioner on their site, register when you buy or submit your test sample with the code: JDEP001 (those are zeros not O’s). I am not sure if you would be asked when you buy or to add that code to the info sheet you would fill out and send in with the sample (cheek swab, insert into a tube, seal, send back). I am not set up yet with clinic and client Terms of Agreement type paperwork but will work toward that goal.
This post has my larger goal for what I think patients and caregivers coping with hyperinflammatory conditions need and which I would like to see happen - hyperinflammation care clinics, or a food truck with educational stops too, pre-arranged classes in self-care needs, or franchise type locally based clubs: Mitochondrial dysfunction and PICS, poor recovery after ICU.
