Stephanie Winn, therapist insider on the cult like promotion of Trans; interview by Jan Jekielek
Focus on "fixing" appearance rather than self acceptance is ~ the opposite of standard therapy goals per Stephanie Winn.
Stephanie Winn shares her story on Epoch TV in an interview by Jan Jekielek on American Thought Leaders. She trained with the DSM4 and graduated and then the DSM5 was published and it changed the definition and care of gender dysphoria.
She was working early in her career in a large group facility that encouraged or demanded therapists take a more active role in.promoting and even writing letters of recommendation for gender change treatment for children. She followed the recommendations up to a point but could see the affirmation therapy was not helping kids who largely had many real troubles of other sorts like autism, history of trauma or being bullied, shame, lots of shame.
Learning of detransitioners was a changing point for Stephanie. Just changing body parts was not helping. It also can cause very early osteoporosis and osteopenia. Puberty blockers early in life can cause mental development changes that can affect cognitive and work ability.
Suicide is used as a scare tactic but completed suicide is less common than talk of it or unsuccessful attempts. Take away access to weapons, knives, pills, car keys maybe, the bedroom door maybe….but keep yourchild in a loving family as that is protective. People say they didn't complete a plan because of family or friends or some other connection.
The current intense promotion of changing a body to fix a mental concern is the opposite if standard training according to Stephanie.
The former way to help would be to affirm the whole person and promote connection to family, friends, hobbies - to life and a sense of purpose. Not to suggest a person’s body was wrong and only their mind was okay. That is really increasing the problem or focus on it as a problem instead of just a phase or quirk that may or may not change with time. Teens change, children change, adults even change.
But do fields of practice get reversed seemingly overnight? It appears so with the publication of the DSM5.
Therapists traditionally probe feelings and help the person dig into their issues - not promote an obsessive compulsive focus on an exterior appearance as something that will fix everything.
Magical thinking is what gets us buying the health infomercial item or the Lottery ticket or the Do-It-Yourself project.
Magic will not get us thin or wealthy or provide more time or skill - unless you know something I don't.
Stephanie Winn eventually stopped seeing new gender dysphoria teens and eventually left the large practice. She now works with parents of teens with the issue, to help the parent navigate an unfamiliar TikTok world that their teen may be spending more time in than with them. She also works with detranstioners but not with those seeking gender change - due to a concern over threats to her professional license.
It can be a problem when upset clients file complaints and harassment has also occurred as she got more vocal on the topic.
Jan Jekielek draws out the story of Stephanie's early concern, and growing concern which became action and advocacy for letting kids be kids.
The focus on building a perfect body too often just leads to a lifetime on.medication and a spiraling downward health record as problems occur. Sterilization and lack of being able to change a mind later about having kids is also a regret for some.
What Stephanie does not mention at all, is endocrine disrupting chemicals and the biological basis in prenatal hormone mismatch. Gender dysphoria is both a real and increasing problem, and a politicized, ‘therapist’ promoted label that has become a social contagion particularly among young females that don't want to participate in the hypersexualized modern view of women.
News flash to people of all types - sex and gender do not have to do with makeup or shoes as much as making and raising babies.
Gaining excess weight is the old-fashioned way to avoid male attention. Now there is a serious push by someone with money to make being really overweight sexy.
More affirming of unhealth by modern media. Affirming people into reduced access to life. It is hard to reach things when really overweight. And health risks tend to increase.
The increased comorbidities with gender dysphoria suggest health is an issue and directly addressing that might help mental wellness so that obsessive compulsive fixation was less likely and simply enjoying life was more likely to be the norm.
Normalizing unwellness, and a toxic environment, is making the cause forbidden to talk about and unwellness, quite common.
When I buy stupid stuff from infomercial type gotcha ads, I consider it a Stupid Tax for my magical thinking. And a reminder to try harder to ignore tha mesmerizing compulsive ad spiel.
Gender dysphoria is a real problem.caused by prenatal hormone mismatch - mom’s uterus had more estrogen or estrogen mimetics during a DNA male baby’s pregnany or she had more androgen.mimetics during a female DNA baby’s pregnancy.
DNA dictates body part shape and the uterine hormone balance controls the innate behavior pattern.
More testosterone or androgens leads to more male pattern behavior - rough, active play, teams, single male leader preferred.
More estrogen or estrogen mimetics leads to more female pattern behavior - quiet play, role playing games, baby doll or animal family scenarios, nurturing and nesting.
We also need to talk about this because there could be future babies if there were less toxins in a pregnancy, with gender typical development. The DNA is unchanged, only the prenatalhormone environment was different than evolution typucal.
Trans people who focused on health more than looks could also be reducing their own long term outlook as it seems reduced especially with hormone treatments.
I may be biased - if bra size defines a female, than mine is pretty small.
The video is long, a little over an hour but covers a lot of ground, across history and current events. Similarity to cults is discussed in detail and how tgat can impact detransitioners too, they are being kicked out of their chosen ‘family’ or community.

I say, this is certainly a "breath of fresh air" article in a realm I had already thought was a near-lost cause. Thanks enormously for pointing us toward information that show where society should be going with this. This is great progress and beyond anything I was expecting to be available.
