I am working on a lab values in centenarians post and it is getting a little involved, so a quick update on the last post.
A reply helped me with my moral dilemma, many did actually, but one did in particular. Others, yes, I can donate more locally, or do more locally, or look for smaller organizations. I also try to donate in support of indigenous American groups.
This exchange was a good reminder of faith though — and the good works that many, many people do as missionaries of love and faith and compassion.
Vonu, Sep 25, “On the other hand, can 1.3 billion believers be wrong?
Jennifer Depew, R.D., Sep 25, “That is the dilemma, you nailed it. We need to recognize and throw out bad apples - or the dirty bathwater, but save the baby.”
People do need clean water around the world and in the US and schools, and warmth, and food, and ways to grow more food.
Are there more bad apples protecting and shuffling around others? or are there enough honorable people in positions of power that offending priests are removed from access to children? It is hard not knowing, but we can’t know everything and there are good people and others in need of help.
Missionaries spread illness at times, but also spread communication and shared languages. We need to try to see the good in things and not just focus on the negatives that turn up. Patterns of negatives that aren’t dealt with is something to watch out for though. Good people helping is a way to be there and see what is happening first hand — or find those local groups who are there and see whether children are happy and healthy or depressed and fearful.
Preyed upon children can be more likely to act out and be the ones frequently punished but they may also be the quiet ones who are never any trouble.
Healthy toddlers are generally cheerful and within reasonable weight height proportions. US food supply and possibly sweet drink habits are pushing more toddlers here into overweight at a very young age. The accumulative low iodine and excess fluoride and bromide for three and a half generations of time also is a factor.
Food donation bags in the US I think based on the convenience food brands. People get hungry year around but it is nice to get something extra at holiday times.
