Indoor garden updates; niacin protocol update and my health is better.
Link to a post by Chris Masterjohn PhD on risks of high dose NAD+ boosters for heart and cardiovascular health. // And my tessellation Christmas cactus went 3D.
Dahlias are my winter surprise and the lettuce is overcrowded and needs magnesium, it is losing its green.
Cilantro nice and frilly
The yawning lion photo was taken by one of my parents on their trip somewhere in Africa where there are lions (I forget where they visited). The brown pot is my mother’s handmade pottery.
This tiny bit of brown fuzz may grow up to be a rusty back fern, relocated from Greece via my herbal tea.
There was a little tuft of dry roots among the dried Rustyback fern fronds and elm leaves. I have been sorting it carefully as there have been quite a few tree leaves among the dried ferns.
I think it is going to do okay. It looks larger are more hydrated than the initial bit of dried roots. It can be grown as a houseplant so I figured, “Why not try and plant it?”
Maybe it will grow up to be tea.
In a surprising move, my tesselation went 3D.
Niacin, nicotinamide, NMN and other forms of NAD+ boosters should be limited to a total of 250 mg/day or less and be used for a short term rather than long term. It may increase cardiovascular risks, but more so for the forms other than niacin itself.
The metabolite of the other NAD+ boosters forms a negative for heart health, but niacin is joined to glycine instead of
“Vascular endothelial dysfunction is an early sign of cardiovascular disease. It can be measured by testing the ability of the forearm blood vessel to dilate after being restricted. Endothelial function increases with increasing niacin intake up to about 50 milligrams per day with no tapering off, suggesting a protective effect of niacin against a very early step in the onset of cardiovascular disease.” - Chris Masterjohn, PhD, Substack.
My own health is doing better. I haven’t had any more labs or went for an MRI though.
Among changes I have made was to wean down from 3000 mg niacin per day, or maybe more, I was a little forgetful and sometimes doubled up on the dose by accident. It helps my congestion and my serotonin levels so I was being cautious but it seemed to help. I got down to about 250 mg and I think it isn’t really enough for my level of inflammation. I was flushing worse than ever on the low dose and my impression is that means I needed more - the body needs more external help to get rid of my inflammatory load.
I am still being cautious but have eased back up to 250 mg twice a day for the last couple days. I have been using potassium bicarbonate afterwards to help offset the acidity.
Reminder: It is niacin/nicotinic acid (or pom peel and other phytonutrients) which blocks mast cell degranulation and efficiently reduces inflammation - not nicotinamide or other downstream from niacin forms of NAD+ boosters.
To be honest with myself, and readers - smoking is not good for health, even if it is medical marijuana. But I haven’t gotten past thinking about stopping combustion of it, well I did look for my vape but couldn’t find it. Hmm, an Action Step towards change, a To-Do list item to do.

JD - Glad to hear your doing better. Good work on cutting back the Niacin, and perhaps "saving" a rusty back fern. Re: niacin - 3000mg is overdosing - 500mg may still be too much. Niacin side effects can include: swelling of face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs. ; an increase in risk of muscle breakdown; and may cause your liver function lab test results to be abnormally high. If you need more than 250mg daily for inflammation, you might consider other remedies.
After 30 days has passed on the ceterach you could cut back to one cup a day. Then fill the other tea time slot with some Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) tea which will complement the rusty fern and I am sure you are well aware of; high chlorogenic acid content; work the kidneys, reduce uric acid. The bonus with urtica is the high Vitamin K content, anti flammatory inhibition of Nf-Kb, Cox1 & 2, and congestion reduction.

It is a shame that they can not report truthfully - world of difference between Niacin and the other forms of B3 - Love my Niacin 500mg every 2-3 days with a B50 to give it something to work with.
