Emergency Radio options - hand crank, CB, or HAM radio.
Don Shift and CB radio is highlighted.
CB or HAM radio, and hand crank radios are good emergency tools to have.
Having an Hand-crank Emergency radio is a good idea to be able to listen to standard AM/FM or emergency broadcast messages when your power is out.
Hand Crank Emergency Radios pick up AM/FM type of channels or Emergency Broadcasts - I see that modern types have the ability to charge devices - that seems like a lot of hand cranking though. $17-40 dollar range (Amazon search handcrank emergency radio)
Having a CB radio or getting trained on HAM radio can also be a good idea for emergency preparedness. With those options, you are able to call out, send your own voice (or music or news update), over the radio airwaves. The distance you might reach would be localized compared to larger radio stations. CB radios are needed to get over mountain ridges. They can have about a 30 mile range based on conditions. Walkie Talkies can be useful for closer teams or families to stay in touch. Cell phones went out early and are still not working in the damaged region of Hurricane Helene.
You could buy Don Shift’s book/s to learn more about CB Radio use (or other nonfiction topics: DonShift.com/nonfiction, he also has fiction books.) “Basic SHFT Radio” (Amazon) (x.com/DonShift3).

HAM Radio would also be a worthwhile skill to learn and to invest in gear. A license is helpful for HAM radio operators, but in an emergency it has value and the airways are open for those with the gear even if you don’t have a license. (I don’t know the details).
“Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of the radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radiosport, contesting, and emergency communications.” … Wikipedia.

Jennifer,
Another excellent article by you. As part of emergency preparedness, nothing is as important as water purification. I just wrote a long article on it a few weeks ago at my Substack: medicalunderground@substack.com. Check it out and let me know what you think. I think it complements your radio article nicely. Best Regards, Doc
